Let's Get the Party Started!

Happy Fourth of July! Summer is getting into swing with barbecues and vacations. Your hydrangea should be in bloom by now and the key to keeping them happy is keeping them moist and if you can, provide afternoon shade. Deer like to munch on these beauties so be careful about where you plant or protect them.

The most important thing for keeping your beauties blooming is knowing exactly which ones you have - because the pruning times are different for different species and you risk pruning at the wrong time. Here's a handy article from The Spruce that spells it out for you!

If you're traveling to different parts of the country or even the state you might come across species you don't normally see close to home - for instance, the east coast has some wonderful beach loving plants you just don't see here. What are they and can they work in your environment?

First identify - then research! Plant Snap is a handy and free app for your phone that you can use to take photos of plants that identifies them. Next, all you have to do is Google the plant and see if it will grow well in your zone (6 or 7 - check the map to see where you fall) according to your light and soil conditions. Now that's a fun and easy hot weather gardening chore!
