Giving Thanks and Preparing for Winter

It's time to wind down for the winter. We're pretty much done with lawn mowing for the year and next it's time for yard cleanup. This includes not only raking the leaves (call if you need help on that one), but also bringing in your pots, taking care of bird baths, and other winterizing chores.

Pots left out will likely crack if left to the elements. Get rid of any spent annuals, dump the dirt, brush them out and store in a dry place. For very large planters that contain plants you want to over winter, cover with a tarp to keep them dry, and secure.

Geraniums love a sunny environment and will survive indoors if they get enough light. Why spend money every year on new ones for the patio when you can bring them inside? You have options even if you don't have a sunny window - check them out here!

Birds and other small animals love having fresh water in colder weather but beware, cement birdbaths, like plant pots can crack when the water in them freezes and thaws repeatedly. You can cover them over, remove the basin and turn it upside down, or invest in a heater that keeps the water from freezing. Check out this article that tells you everything you need to know about safely heating your birdbath.

If you're looking forward to Spring already, remember now is the time to plant spring blooming bulbs. Daffodils bring cheer to the dreary March landscape and come in several varieties for extended bloom time. Tulips are an elegant addition to any garden but deer love them so plant with care. If you have a problem with chipmunks digging up your bulbs, try allium, snowdrops or grape hyacinth. Here are more hints to protect your bulbs.

While you're busy getting all that taken care of, let me know if you need help with your holiday lighting. I've got a couple of jobs booked already so please let me know at your earliest convenience
