February - it's not just for roses anymore!

Happy February!

The days are slowly starting to get longer and there's only a little more than a month until Spring officially arrives. You don't have to wait until Spring to enjoy flowers though - February is an excellent month to enjoy the beauty of forced bulbs. It's too late to do this now but put it on your calendar for fall and this time next year you can be enjoying a beautiful indoor garden. Here's how to do it. If you have pets, beware of bulbs like crocus and snowdrops. They're lovely to look at but toxic for them.

The Farmer's Almanac Forecast for our area predicts a slightly warmer than usual February which makes it an excellent opportunity to get an early start in the garden. You can water plants when it's above 40 degrees as well as edging or putting down mulch. It's a perfect time to clean and sharpen tools if you didn't get to it last fall. February is a good time to prune hellebores if you have them. You can read more about hellebores, or lenten roses, which bloom all winter long on my blog post here.
